I Can't Proofread My Own Material
Date 6/29/2008    Tags Rant    (0)

One thing you'll notice if you regularly read this blog is that I sometimes make grammatical errors, and sometimes they're big ones. The crazy thing is, I can read someone else's material and nitpick the hell out of grammar and syntax. But there is something about my own writing that I have issue with.

It's like my brain knows what I intended to say, so when I read it over to myself (I reread each post I make at least a couple times), it comes out in my head like it should be. It's not until either someone points out the obvious grammatical misgivings that they become clear to me (often times done in a derogatory comment flaming my deficiencies with the English language).

This brings to mind a post that I once saw passed around MySpace. Whether this was a legit study by Cambridge University or not, it reflects something rather amazing about the human brain. Take a read for yourself.
Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be in the rghit pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe.
While this is only on a word level, I feel like this is the same behavior I experience on a sentence level when trying to proofread material. My brain figures out where the sentence is going from the first and last words and however things fall in-between is inconsequential… until someone else tries to read it at least.
