Crazy People Kept Driving Through My Yard
Date 7/4/2008    Tags Rant    (0)

There is something strange about people that live around my old house. When I first moved in, people liked to drive through my yard to get to the road that ran parallel to my property. Never mind that the turn off to the actual road was less than 50 feet further and was an actual road.

I moved in shortly before winter, which is really how I noticed this epidemic. They never did it when I was home, but when I would come back from work or from going out, I'd see fresh car tracks through the snow every time without fail.

Maybe I was a little insane, but this really irked me so I started building a snow wall. Three feet high (I lived in Upper Michigan, where snowfall was plentiful) and at least that much deep. Instead of getting the point that I didn't want them going through my yard, people went around the wall. So I had to extend the wall further and further until I reached a hill on my land. And then they started to go through the wall.

I would like to think most people are smart enough to figure out that if someone puts up any sort of wall (snow, brick, or fashionable orange plastic net), the desired behavior isn't to crash through said wall. But this simple concept was light years ahead of the people that were driving through my yard.

Now I had to get serious. I debated putting things in the wall (bricks, nails, C4) but ultimately felt this could get me in trouble if anyone got hurt or seriously messed up their vehicle. I choose instead to begin icing the wall. It was too cold to still have the hose hooked up (which would have made this very easy) so instead I would bring bucket after bucket of water out onto my wall.

After an hour of trips back and forth, I had a nice wet wall. Come the following morning, it was a nice shiny ice-wall. And it took but a day and someone made their way through the wall.

But all was not for not. I rebuilt the wall and, much to my surprise, no one ever attempted to go through the ice wall again. It's my guess that whoever dared to go through the ice wall didn't make it through easily or unscathed.

Sadly once the wall melted, I had the same issue of people driving through my yard. I planted some trees in the way and they were actually run over and killed, which made me rather angry. Ultimately I put down a couple railroad ties and this finally marked the end of people going through my yard. I was happy yes, but victory came at the cost of two trees and many hours of hard labor. 0" style="di
