Tooting My Own Horn
I've had my game Nasty in play test over at the XNA Creators Club for the past month (give or take). It's been a helpful processes as it has uncovered bugs in my game and also helped me fine tune other areas of the game play.
Largely the game has been a success so far, though taking a few more months to complete than anticipated. I just thought I would share some of the good things that have been said about Nasty so far.
pretty solid and fun!
I played this and found it pretty addictive :) I loved that you added the ability to shoot in all 8 directions, and I loved the boss battle!
I think you have a really nice game going.
I found the game fairly easy to get into. I'm not sure how many levels I played, probably about 15, and thought they provided a bit of a challenge but were easy enough to keep me playing.
Nice Game!
Fun, simple game. Found it quite addicting.
I could easily find myself playing through hundreds of different levels without even realizing it. It's not to "puzzlely" which can slow down game play. It can be mindless (in a good way), but not boring. There is a brief, rewarding sense of accomplishment going through each stage.
Over all it feels pretty solid. The menus feel polished, the music is appropriate, etc.
Overall I liked it, it's sort of like Contra meets Bubble Bobble.
Hi, I tried your game and it's pretty good!
I like the feel of everything, had a good oldschool feel to it.
I played for a good while and was entertained the whole time.
I thought the game was pretty cool.
I think Nasty's pretty fun. I think my favorite moment was level 15 when there was that vast chasm and I thought to myself, "ok, I know that I can jump strangely far...but this is a bit of a leap of faith." But the enemies were wrapping bottom to top and I figured what they hey, I have infinate continues. Freefall combat, it turns out, is my favorite part of the game. I also liked the gun and the Contra-like-ness of the main character. Awards after levels were neat, and the gameplay fun.
I also let my friend play Nasty earlier last week, he was really grooving to it.
It's rather encouraging to hear so many good things said. The hardest part of a project is when you near the end, as you're often left fixings many issues/bugs/loose ends that you avoid doing because they're not fun/difficult/not fun and difficult. Positive feedback is a good motivator to get through working on those sorts of issues.
While the play test feedback has been kind to Nasty, the real test will come once it is available to consumers. I just hope they can enjoy the game as much as the play testers did.
