Nasty Game Progress Update 4
It's been a month since my last progress update and a lot has changed in that time. Better collision detection, new enemies (a couple rather interesting additions), ten or so new levels, and lots of polish to the overall package. Nasty is really starting to look and play good.
First off, obviously I did not release the game in March as intended nor will I likely release this month. I could have rushed it out the door but I would not have been happy with the result (nor likely would people who bought it), as I would have had to cut features and levels from the game and thus would not have fully realized my vision for what Nasty could be. My todo list of features that I need to implement and bugs I need to fix is getting smaller by the day. Four pages long a few weeks ago, it's now down to under one page (with several of the remaining issues being less than 1 hour fixes). There are only about three larger issues that could potentially take more than ten hours each to complete.
Even if I finish that todo list, that doesn't mean the game is ready. What will still remain is playtesting/tweaking gameplay and levels and improving the graphics of the levels and the menu system. I feel taking a few weeks (maybe a month) to bang on this aspect of the game will ultimately be very beneficial. I'm also going to spend some time playing competing/similar games to get a feel for how my game stacks up. What I learn from playing those games may ultimately lead me to improvements in my game.
Initially when I set out to create Nasty, I felt I would like to have 100 levels. After being in development for several months, this felt like too much. I wasn't sure I could make 100 different, interesting levels for users to play and considered doing 50-60 levels instead. With as many enemies as I have now, several more than initially envisioned, I'll need 100 levels to give the player (that's you) adequate opportunities to do battle with each enemy type. With 43 levels done right now, several of these enemies are making only brief appearances and that's just a waste of good enemies.
I've come to realize I need to update the Nasty website too... screen shots on the website are not indicative of how the game looks now and videos don't truly show how it plays either. Looking at the website gives the impression that I haven't done any work in several months, which is far from the truth. I will make an effort this weekend to do some updates.
That's where I'm at now. More work and more polish to the game awaits. Hopefully this time next month, you'll be playing the game instead of listening to me talk about it.
