Nasty Game Progress Update 5
Date 5/22/2009    Tags Nasty    (0)

I should really quit saying that I expect Nasty to be released each month, as I've been doing since about April. I'm beginning to feel like I'm on a Duke Nukem Forever development cycle (if that were the case, the next logical step would be to scrap the engine and start over, release a video of the new game in action, then start over again). So this month I'm not going to say anything more on the release date other than that we're a lot closer to the end than to the beginning.

Most of the past month has been spent on creating new levels for Nasty. A month ago, I was in the mid-40's and now I'm up to 89. The final game will have 100 levels, math tells me that means I have only 11 levels left to create! It's my goal to finish those 11 levels by the end of this month. I'll also tweak existing levels some, though nothing major. I usually spend a couple hours each week going through old levels and touching them up, those of you who have play tested multiple version of Nasty may have noticed subtle changes in levels between versions (always for the better I assure you).

One of the cooler new additions I've made to Nasy is a snake boss that is made up of a head and three tail segments. The snake boss bounces around the level, often times crashing into the player. In order to defeat the boss, you must start by destroying the last piece of his tail and continue doing that until all that is left is his head, which you can then also destroy. This boss is working for the most part though his body has a tendency to catch up with his head, causing them to overlap. Once that is fixed, the boss will be complete.

I added two new enemies as well. The first is a Red Ghost, as seen in this previous post. The Red Ghost bounces around the level like the Blue and Green Ghosts do, but after a set amount of time, he will multiply. This creates an interesting dynamic where you must quickly target and destroy the Red Ghosts before the level is full of these guys. The second enemy is a variation of a current robot "Sentinel" that takes pot-shots at the player from a higher vantage point. This creates a bit of strategy as you need to evade his shots in order to position yourself in a spot where you can successfully return fire.

With most of the enemies done and most of the features done and most of the levels done, soon I will be able to concentrate on polishing Nasty to a brilliant, glossy shine that likes of which would make Mr. Clean jealous. It will be a welcome change to be able to concentrate on simply improving aspects of the game rather than adding in new ones.
