Nasty Game Progress Update 6
Date 6/17/2009    Tags Nasty    (0)

Development on Nasty is largely done at this point. Everything I wanted to include when I envisioned Nasty is complete. Several new ideas that either I thought of or came about because of playtesting are included as well. The game overall is really a much better product that what I had planned to create, which is really the best outcome I could have hoped for.

That said, I still think Nasty is about a month off from release. Why? Because I strongly feel that taking that much time to polish Nasty is more than worth the effort. All too often games are rushed to get out the door and are missing just a few little updates/tweaks that could make a good game great. Not to say Nasty is great (I'm too humble to say that, but I hope you think so), but putting a real effort into polishing the game is going to make it much better than before.

The past week has already largely been spent on polishing the game... updating graphics, tweaking levels to make game play more interesting, and tweaking enemy behavior to make them either more balanced or more challenging to defeat. It's already very apparent when playing Nasty how beneficial these changes have been as the game looks and plays better than ever before.

Aside from polishing and polishing some more, I also finished up the intro/ending sequences. Scripting enemy movement to create a video is a very difficult to get right (at least with an engine designed for people to play, not watch). XNA Game Studio 3.1 was just released that has video capabilities, but unfortunately this was slightly too late for me to use (and you still cannot submit games to Xbox Live Community Indie Games anyways).

Still remaining on my plate is one bug related to the snake boss that I have been reluctant to fix, adding about five more levels to the battle mode (easy to do and I think will be overall a very good thing to have), tweaking more levels (especially the later levels, some of which are exceedingly difficult), and finally cleaning up/improving the game's graphics.

I could happily submit Nasty right now to be released and it would probably pass review... but the game you'll get in July will be much better. Did I say that? Nasty will be released in July? No way, you must be hearing things. /td
